E-Wood, waste-to-Energy from non-recyclable wood waste

Energy from waste is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based energy. The circular economy needs affordable and reliable energy. We invest in energy clusters so that even more companies and local residents can benefit from a flexible and competitive energy supply.

Energy from 180 000 tonnes of wood waste per year

The E-Wood installation on the Indaver site in Doel became operational in December 2022. E-Wood is a 50-50 partnership of Indaver and Veolia.
E-Wood will convert approximately 180,000 tons of non-recyclable wood waste into energy every year. E-wood uses fluidized bed technology, equipped with a boiler and turbo generator with high efficiency.

Sustainable supply of energy

The energy released by the treatment process is converted into electricity or used as steam.

E-Wood has a thermal capacity (energy capacity) of 80 MW on an annual basis. Using a turbine, up to 20MW of electricity can be supplied to the high voltage grid. Thanks to a stable supply of the wood waste stream and a continuous treatment process, stable green energy can be produced and delivered independent of weather conditions.

Part of E-wood's green energy is valorised as steam. The steam is delivered to the Ecluse steam network in the Waasland Port for neigbouring companies. Companies using steam from E-Wood reduce their carbon footprint. They save on fossil fuel use by disconnecting from gas-fired boilers. The quantity of the emissions prevented by E-Wood can be compared to the prevented CO2 emissions from approximately 45 wind turbines.

Wood waste, a renewable source of energy

E-Wood converts wood waste, that is not suitable for material recycling, into useful and renewable energy.
It consists of:

  • uncontaminated treated wood waste that is unsuitable for recycling;
  • contaminated treated wood waste;
  • screen overflow from green composting;
  • the woody fraction from green waste (woody material that is separated prior to composting)

The supply is attracted from Belgium and neighbouring countries.

Construction of the facility

Construction of this facility started in the spring of 2020. The investment amounted to €95 million. E-Wood provides employment for 15 employees. In the timelapse video, you can follow the construction works and important milestones until the official start of the installation in December 2022.

European climate goals

With its Green Deal, the European Commission has established ambitious objectives. By 2030 the share of energy from renewable sources in the energy mix must be at least 30%. Flanders needs green energy to attain these climate targets.

Wood waste is a renewable source of energy. By using this wood waste as raw material, E-Wood produces green energy. In this way E-Wood contributes to the attainment of both the EU’s and Flanders’ climate goals.
